J.H. BREWER PASSES AWAY
KENSAL LOSES A MOST DESIRABLE CITIZEN
We again bow in sorrow at the death of one of our most prominent and influential citizens, J.H. Brewer, who passed away last Saturday morning at his home here after a two week illness, the cause of death being an internal hemorrhage. This last illness undoubtedly dates back to an operation performed at Rochester, Minnesota, about twelve or thirteen years ago. When the final illness overtook Mr Brewer, Dr Longstreth was immediately called, who in turn called Mrs R.C. Feckler, a trained nurse, on the case and everything that medical skill and professional nursing could do was done for him. He was constantly surrounded by his family members, his daughters, Mrs Kern, Mrs Cress and Mrs Sebastian, having reached his bedside more than a week before he passed away. Being conscious perhaps to the last, it was comforting to both father and daughters that her was able to converse with them, as he called for them repeatedly at the beginning of his illness, and they were sent for at once.
In the passing of Mr Brewer, the family is bereft of a kind, thoughtful, loving, Christian father, the community one of its most loyal citizens. It is to the prosperous type of pioneers such as Mr Brewer was that we owe our present heritage, a community wherein we can live and enjoy the worthwhile which they made possible for us.
Mr Brewer was a devout and faithful church member, as was stressed by Father McDonald in funeral sermon, wherein he said it was to the faithful band of Christians, of which Mr Brewer was one, that the people of the parish are now privileged to attend services in one of the prettiest, most spacious and comfortable church homes in this vicinity.
James Hubert Brewer was born May 6th, 1854, at Iowa City, Iowa, and at the age of one year moved with his parents to a homestead near Rochester, Minnesota, on which farm he resided continuously until he moved to North Dakota. On June 15th, 1880, he was united in marriage to Miss Delia Bridget Moran. Into this home were born six children, three daughters and three sons.
In the year 1900, the family migrated to North Dakota in pioneer fashion, in a covered wagon. Here, Mr Brewer purchased land north of Kensal, where he built for his family one of the most comfortable farm homes, and which was one of the most hospitable homes in the neighborhood for both adults and young people. From time to time, other tracts of land adjacent to the farm were acquired, and at the time of his death Mr Brewer was one of the largest land owners in the county *. After the three sons attained manhood, they assumed the management of the farms, and Mr and Mrs Brewer traveled quite extensively, spending the winters from 1910 to 1922 in California and Florida. The past two winters Mr and Mrs Brewer have spent in Kensal, where they purchased a home, the three sons operating and managing the farms.
Mr Brewer was a kind, considerate neighbor and was held in highest esteem by everyone, as was evidenced at his funeral, which was one of the most largely attended in the history of the community, being attended by friends, neighbors, and former neighbors, some coming from considerable distances to attend.
Funeral services were held last Monday morning at 10 AM at St John's Catholic Church, Father McDonald officiating, who paid a beautiful tribute to the life of the deceased. A Requiem High Mass was sung. Interment was made at St John's Cemetery. The pallbearers were all old pioneer friends of the deceased and were Vincent Ableidinger, George B McKenzie, T.J. Walsh, Albert Hanson, Anton Feckler, and R.N. Romalfanger.
Those left to mourn are the wife and mother; three daughters, Mrs Cress of Lewiston, Idaho, Mrs George A Kern of Los Angeles, California and Mrs Martin Sebastian of Hingham, Montana; three sons, Walter, George, and Arthur, all of Kensal; ten grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; and two brothers, Charles and N.R. Brewer of St Paul, MN. Other relatives from out of town in attendance at the funeral were Mrs Sarah Sievert of St Paul, sister of Mrs Brewer, and William and Alice McCarron of St Paul, nephew and niece of Mrs Brewer.
The Brewer family have the sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement.
