As a young girl, Stella picked up the mail at Carpenter's Store in Royalton and delivered it by mule to the families who lived at Half Mountain. She was also known to play the banjo when she was younger. Mack and Stella met after his mother moved her family down to Half Mountain, near Royalton. They met while ice skating on the creek near her home. In later years, Grandma Allen always wanted people to stay for dinner. She was used to cooking for a large family and was well known for her fried chicken, biscuits, and gravy. Grandpa Allen often referred to her affectionately as "Mrs. Allen."
