"Following his graduation at the University, Dr. Byers was received as intern in the Norwood Clinic in ...Birmingham, Ala., in which he served for a year; then returned to the University of Virginia for additional internship and resident work in gynecology and obstetrics. ...In September 1931, he entered upon the general practice of medicine in Harrisonburg where has since been successfully engaged directing his chief attention to gynecology and obstetrics. For two years he was city health officer, and for the last 12 years he has been coroner for the city and county. At present he is a member of the local selective service board. He belongs to the Phi Beta Pi Fraternity, American Medical Association, Southern Medical Society, and the medical society of Rockingham County; is a member of the staff of Rockingham Memorial Hospital; a charter member of the city Lions Club; belongs to the Elks; and in the foegoing has held several offices. He is a member of the Harrisonburg Methodist Church. In his reading he naturally gives preference to medical literature, but is interested also in popular writings. Since boyhood he has been fond of athletics and all outdoor sports. In high school he played football and was a member of the relay track team that won the state championship in 1923. At the University he was a member of the track team and played in the University band for two years. He finds enjoyable recreation in hunting and takes much interest in gardening."
