He resided in Marinette for most of his life and was a graduate of Marinette High School. After high school, Robert attended the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y. During World War II, he served in the Merchant Marine service. He held a Master's License from the United States Coast Guard and spent a decades-long career as a Ship's Captain in Great Lakes and U.S. coastal waters. Bob was also a Delivery Captain for Marinette Marine Corp. and Peterson Ship Builders of Sturgeon Bay and Vice-President of Angwall-Dormer Co., a cold storage and commercial fishing business in Menominee.
With his wife, Merlaine, he was a co-owner of a women's fashion shop in downtown Marinette.
Active in the community, Bob had served on the Police and Fire Commission for the City of Marinette, was a member of the Harbor Commission and was a former member of the Marinette County Board of Supervisors. He was a Director Emeritus of Farmers & Merchants Bank & Trust; a member of the Marinette Elks Lodge, the American Legion, the Marinette-Menominee Chamber of Commerce and Our Savior's Lutheran Church.
He is survived by one son, Lloyd (Rita Dura) Angwall of Marinette, Wis;
a daughter, Merlaine (John) Zarbano of Oshkosh, Wis.;
four grandchildren, Lloyd Angwall, Jr., Tracy (Tim) Bensen, Nick (Beth) Zarbano and Tony (Amanda) Zarbano;
four great-grandchildren;
and one sister, Helen (Mrs. Clair Deaton ) Deaton of Houston, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Merlaine (Surk) Angwall.
Friends may call at Hansen-Onion-Martell funeral home, Marinette, after 12 noon on Friday, October 26, 2012. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday in the funeral home with the Rev. James Wendt officiating.
Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery.
