SEARCH STILL ON OVER SAGINAW BAY
Although search continues for Trooper Ralph Broullire, 28, Iron Mountain; Otto VanDyke, 39, & 2 boys whom they – with a 3rd man – set out March 16 to rescue from an ice-flow in Saginaw Bay, no trace of the 4 have been found.
The body of the 3rd man, Virgil Fortin, 28, Bay City, Mich., was found several days ago in shallow water, 200 yards from a point where the small rescue boat was located.
The boys whom they were trying to save were John Guyotte, 15 & Donald McIntyre, 17, both Bay City, who were stranded on an ice floe.
VanDyke, an ex-coastguardsman, is now proprietor of the Mutual Drug Store. He has 2 daughters, 16 & 18.
Fortin was an electrician for Dow Chemical Company, Bay City & has 1 child, 5 years old.
The rescue boat was found out of the ice about a mile off shore. Although the boat was undamaged, the air-tight chambers were filled with water.
