WATERVILLE - Elias C. "Mokus" Karter, 87, of Waterville died Friday, Nov. 18, 2005, at Oak Grove Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. Elias was born on May 4, 1918, to Nora (Peters) Karter and Bolus Karter.

Elias graduated from Waterville High School in 1937, making him the first in his family to complete high school. As a young man he worked any job he could find to help support his family. He spent the majority of his adult working years as the Wyandotte Worsted Woolen Mill in various capacities.

Although he never married, he was a consummate family man and beloved father figure to many of his nieces and nephews. He loved his family and never thought it a burden to help then in any way he was able. Before he lost his eyesight, Elias was an avid reader. He was a master at crossword puzzles, a true wordsmith. He enjoyed language and wordplay and wrote poems for his friends and family.

Elias was a communicant of St. Joseph Maronite Church in Waterville. His lifelong friend, Deacon Peter Joseph, provided continuing friendship and pastoral care, which Elias truly appreciated.

Elias is survived locally by his youngest sister, Virginia Poulin of Waterville. Virginia was instrumental in caring for Elias and her support helped him to remain at home for as long as possible. He is also survived locally by his niece, Patricia Geary, and her partner, William Black, of Vassalboro; nephew Eric Poulin and his partner, Linda Fairburn; and niece Lauren Ross and her husband, Rick Ross, of Readfield. Elias is also survived by many family members out of state, including many nieces and nephews; and a sister, Freda Denis of Connecticut. Elias was predeceased by both his parents, and three sisters, Alice Violette, Louise Geurrard and Carrie Bureau. (Morning Sentinel 11/19/2005)
