Grand Island (Nebraska) Daily Independent
Friday, 4 January 1929

Death came peacefully and suddenly to Mrs. Detlef Peters, 88, while she slept, early Friday morning at her home, 1209 West John street. Though she had been gradually failing in health for some time, apparently she was as well as usual when she retired Thursday night. Shortly after 3 a.m. Friday, a son heard her coughing and about two hours later, when members of her family went to the bedside, it was found that she had passed away, evidently following a sudden heart attack.

Mrs. Peters, formerly Margartha Bernhardt, was born in Holstein, Germany, on August 23, 1840 (sic). There she was married in 1864 to Detlef Peters. In 1884, Mr. and Mrs. Peters came to America, coming directly to Grand Island which has ever since been her home. Mr. Peters preceded her in death about thirty years ago. Surviving are three sons, Fred, Herman and Ferdinand, all of Grand Island; six grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and three sisters, Mrs. Anna Thiessen, residing in Holstein, Germany, Mrs. Henry Sanders, and Mrs. Carsten Peers, both of Grand Island. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday from the home, Rev. H. Schumann officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island cemetery.
