Francis Anthony Kaelin, of Pacific Grove, died at Community Hospital on December 29.

A native of Evansville, IN, he was born December 3, 1922. Francis retired from the US Army as a Sergeant 1st Class. His career spanned over 26 years and three wars, World War II, Korea and Vietnam and included a tour of duty at the Defense Language Institute. He received a Bronze Star for his distinguished military service.

Francis was a very active parishioner at St. Angela Merici Catholic Church in Pacific Grove where he served as a greeter and was a member of the I-Help committee and the 40+ Singles Group. He was also a member and Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus, Monterey Council #1465, the Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Council #0077, Santa Rosalia Assembly, Italian Catholic Federation at St. Angela's and the Serra Club. Francis served on the Board of Directors of the Monterey Columbian Federal Credit Union and was also an active member of the Community Hospital Auxiliary.

Additionally, he was a member of the Monterey Civic Club, Monterey Elks Lodge, Monterey Moose Lodge, the Scottish Society of the Monterey Peninsula, Monterey Bay Aquarium, Monterey History and Art Association, Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History and a life member of both the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Francis is survived by his wife of 6 years, Dolores Robertson Kaelin; his children, Theresa (Walter) Murphy of North Carolina, Bob (Nesly) Kaelin ofof Monterey, Mary Jane (Paul) Kindle of Salinas, Cecelia Kaelin of Monterey and Bill Kaelin of Seaside; his step-children, Angela Brown of Pacific Grove, Rebecca Johnston of Canada and Thomas Robertson of Los Angeles; five sisters, one brother, 19 grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. His wife of 38 years, Mary Frances, preceded him in death in 1992.

Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Angela Merici Church in Pacific Grove today, Wed, Jan 4 at 10AM. Burial with full military honors will follow at San Carlos Catholic Cemetery in Monterey.
