"After attending public schools in Augusta County until the age of 13, Ashby entered Augusta Military Academy where he was a student until 1893. Then, having read medicine with Dr. J. S. Sellers of Weyers Cave for two years, he entered the medical department of the University of Maryland, and from that institution received the degree of M.D. on June 2, 1901. At the University he was elected a member of the Rush Club, an organization in the medical school to which men were chosen on competitive scholastic merit. Upon graduation he established a medical partnership with Dr. E. D. Davis at Lacey Spring, continuing there until February, 1910, when he located in Harrisonburg where he has since been successfully engaged in general practice, with special work in different lines. He is one of the original staff of Rockingham Memorial Hospital, and has served from time to time as instructor in dermatology, therapeutics, and obstetrics in the hospital nursing school. He has also served as health officer for the city and coroner for the city and county. He is a member of the Medical Society of Virginia, the Southern Medical Association, the Rockingham County Medical Society, of which he has been president a number of times, and the Shenandoah Valley Medical Society, of which he was vice-president in 1938-39...Dr. Byers has been active in civic, educational, and fraternal organizations. He is a charter member of the local Rotary Club, a life member and past exalted ruler B. P. O. E.; has served on the city school board; was president of the Rockingham Turkey Festival and served as chief marshal in mammoth parades. He is a member of the Methodist Church; in politics a Democrat. His hobby is horseback riding, and he takes a keen interest in horse shows, horticulture, and sports such as football, baseball, and swimming." The firm of Byers Brothers comprises Doctor Byers and Sam Byers, Jr. This firm stands in the front rank among Eastern Hereford cattle breeders and Doctor Byers is president of the State Hereford Association and is also president of the Rockingham Fair Association. The head of the Byers herd is 'Publican the Seventh', a ten thousand dollar bull which took second at the American Royal Stock Show in a class of fifty-eight, stood second in the International Stock Show in a class of forty-eight, and has been champion and grand champion all through the East since he was two years old. He is now four years old. Byers Brothers hold a public sale annually, and the average of prices brought at these sales in the past three years has been the highest throughout the East. "Dr. Ashby Clifford Byers, 71, widely-known Harrisonburg physician, died at eight o'clock Thursday morning at his home, 657 South Main Street. A son of the late Samuel and Catherine Cline Byers, he was born in Burketown on June 27, 1875, and spent the early part of his life in that community. On October 15, 1902, Dr. Byers was united in marriage to Miss Daisy Sherman, of Mt. Crawford.
