Kent Wear Thomas, age 78 of Kodak, TN passed away Thursday November 1, 2012.

Kent was born at the home of Robert P. and Alice Wear, his maternal grandparents, on December 13, 1933. He was brought to the home of John H. and Carrie Thomas, his paternal grandparents, when he was a few weeks old. Later, his parents, Dewell Smith and Annice Wear Thomas built their own home and moved into it.

He joined Oak Grove Methodist Church in 1940. He was very active in the church and held several offices. In 1996, he became a charter member of Kodak United Methodist Church.

He attended Beech Springs Elementary School and graduated from Sevier County High School in 1952. He graduated from Tennessee Wesleyan College in 1954 with his AA degree. He continued his education for a third year, but knowing he would soon be drafted into the U.S. Army he decided to go to work so he could save money for traveling. Later in his life, he attended the University of Tennessee.

Kent Wear and Vivian Carol Stanbery Thomas were married December 28,
1954 at Broadway Methodist Church in Maryville, TN. They resided in Kodak in a house that Dewell and Kent built following a brief stay in Athens, TN. In May 1956, Kent was drafted and taken to Fort Jackson, SC until he was transferred to Fort Ord, CA where he took his basic training. Following further schooling, he received orders to be stationed in Schweinfurt, Germany. He and his wife lived there until they returned to Kodak in April 1958.

Kent held many jobs, but worked longest at Cementation Co. and retired from Knox County's Carter High School as a Metals Technology teacher in 1996.

Prior to entering the service, Kent received his first degree at French Broad Lodge F&AM #588. When he returned on furlough, he received his second degree. In the meantime, the big store (which was the Lodge Hall) burned. After Kent returned from Germany, he received his third degree from the French Broad Lodge, but the meeting was held at Mountain Star Lodge in Sevierville. In 2006, Kent became Master of the French Broad Lodge and in 2008, he became a 50 year member. In later years, he received his 32nd degree from the Scottish Rite. He joined the Kerbela Shriners and the Royal Order of Jesters, Court 57. When the new Lodge building was built in Kodak on land donated by the Thomas Family, Kodak Order of the Eastern Star #460 was formed. Kent was a 50 plus year member of Kodak OES and was Past Patron many times.

Kent was Chairman of Oak Grove Cemetery for many years. He was a Kentucky Colonel and belonged to the Tuckahoe Rabbit Hunters. All of his life, he loved motorcycles and he and Vivian traveled all over the U.S. and Canada. They loved traveling and made many trips to Europe and Central America.

Kent was preceded in death by his parents, Dewell Smith and Annice Wear Thomas.
