Ellicott City Times, February 20, 1920

Mr. William H. Gerwig, well-known farmer and lifelong resident of Howard County, died at the Maryland General Hospital Wednesday night following an operation on Monday last. The operation was necessary because of an ulcerated stomach. Mr. Gerwig had been in ill health for a long time and his condition became so critical last week that it was necessary to remove him to a hospital. Slight hope for his recovery was entertained after the operation. Due to his ill health Mr. Gerwig turned over active control of his farm near Pine Orchard to his eldest son, Carl, several years ago.

Besides his widow, Mrs. Isabelle Gerwig, he is survived by nine daughters and two sons, Mrs. Burke Rossberg, of Irvington; Mrs. William Traub, of Govans; Mrs. Herman Rossberg, of Catonsville; Mrs. William Manahan, of Washington, D.C.; Mrs. Elmer Hurst, of Detroit, Mich.; Mrs. Walter Henley, of Charleston, W.Va.; Mrs. Ethel Rider; The Misses Pauline and Emily Gerwig and Messrs. Carl and Wendell Gerwig, all of Howard County.

His funeral will take place this Saturday at 2 P.M. from his late residences. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Mr. Horpel of Oella M. E. Church. Pall bearers will be Messrs. Frank B. Keys, Hart B. Noll, John Seward, Norman Peddicord, Louis Dunkel and Notley [H?]enley. Burial will be made in St. John's Cemetery. Scott M. Starr, of Ellicott City, will be in charge of funeral arrangements.
