Assistant Fire Chief Alan Grant Nelson, 69, of Seneca passed away Wednesday October 31, 2012 at his home.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at the Seneca Volunteer Fire Station with Rev. David Davies of the First Methodist Church in Ottawa officiating. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 p. m. Sunday at Seals-Campbell Funeral Home in Marseilles.

He was born on May 16, 1943 in Chicago to Gordon and Doris (Alander) Nelson. In 1965, he married Shirley Schultz of Country Club Hills who survives.

Alan was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ottawa, served in the Air National Guard and was a member of the V.F.W. He was employed by Illinois Bell for 30 years until his retirement, then he was a maintenance man at Pleasant View Luther Home. He had been a Cub Scout packmaster for Pack 100. Alan was an EMT for the Seneca Ambulance and was a fireman for the Seneca Volunteer Fire Department for over 20 years, currently serving as assistant chief.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley; two daughters, Laura (Matt) Mason of Deer Park and Julie (Dave) Mantzke of Somonauk; one son, Geoff of Waterman; seven grandchildren, Anna, Sarah, Tess and Justus Mason, and Dori, Nelson and Grant Mantzke; three brothers, Gerry (Barbara) of Basking Ridge, NJ, Rick (Judi) of Bolingbrook and Kent (Patti) of Naperville.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Seneca Fire and Ambulance or the donor's choice.

Pallbearers will be Geoff Nelson, Matt Mason, Dave Mantzke, Gerry, Rick and Kent Nelson and Glen Rodie.
