Ira B. Pitcher, 75, longtime resident of Norway ME and most recently a resident of Schooner Estates in Auburn ME, died Sept. 1, 1998, at his home. He was born in Lewiston ME on Nov. 18, 1922, the son of Alver M. and Hattie (Poland) Pitcher.

He attended Lewiston Schools and graduated from Lewiston High School with the class of 1940. While in High School he participated in football, skiing, and many other class activities. He enlisted in the U.S. Naval Air Corps in August 1942 and earned the coveted Gold Wings of a Naval Aviator in October 1943. Following Carrier Qualification he was assigned to Fighting Squadron #60 aboard the Escort Carrier U.S.S. Swannee and for the next year took part in bombing, strafing, and air support for Pacific landing operations including MacArthur's return to the Philippines and the battle for Leyte Gulf, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal.

Following his discharge from the Navy he returned to Maine and entered Bowdoin College, graduating in September 1948. During his college years he was captain of the football team, president of the P.S.I.U. Fraternity, and a member of the Student Council. He married the former Patricia Frangedakis on December 18, 1948, and pursued a career in finance and banking, retiring in 1983 as Vice-president of Norstar Bank in Lewiston. During a very active lifetime, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, skiing, and traveling. He was a member of the Second Congregational Church of Norway. He was also a member of Martindale and Norway Country Clubs and a member and Past Master of Nezinscot Lodge #101 AF and AM of Turner. Mr. Pitcher also enjoyed memberships with the Turner Chapter #41 Royal Arch Masons, the Dunlap Council #8 Royal and Select masters, the Lewiston Commandery #6 Knights Templar, and the Kora Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. He had a tremendous love for his family and friends and a strong respect for his church, country, and college.

Mr. Pitcher is survived by his daughters Nancy B. Pitcher of Poland ME and Jennifer M. Pitcher of Newry ME; son S. Thomas Pitcher of Hanover ME; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister Phyllis I. McKenna of Wiscasset ME; and daughter-in-law Nancy Satterthwaite of Poland ME.

He was predeceased by his wife Patricia in January 1993 and their son Matthew Pitcher in February of 1989.
