He worked for The Lexington Leader, the Associated Press in Frankfort and Louisville, and The Lexington Herald. During that time he also served in England with Air Force intelligence (1956-57) teaching air crews evasion and escape techniques. In 1965 he entered the Episcopal Theological Seminary in Kentucky, and received the Master of Divinity degree in 1968. He was ordained deacon and then priest by the Rt. Rev. William R. Moody. He later taught at the seminary. He received his Doctor of Ministry degree in 1986 from the Graduate Theological Foundation. Fr. Horine served as Episcopal chaplain at St. Augustine's, Lexington, then as rector of St. Stephen's, Covington. Afterword he was assistant to the rector at Christ Church (now the cathedral). For two years he was canon to the ordinary for the Rt. Rev. Addison Hosea before being called as rector of St. Michael's, Lexington. A voice problem forced him to retire after nine years. In retirement Fr. Horine was a voluntary chaplain for Hospice of the Blue Grass, and did Sunday services at smaller churches, including St. Thomas, Beattyville, and Advent, Cynthiana. In 1985 he became associate editor of Forward Movement Publications, an agency of the Episcopal Church, in Cincinnati. He continued there for 12 years, retiring as senior editor. For the past decade he has been priest associate at Christ Church Cathedral, first with the Very Rev. Morris Thompson and continuing with the Very Rev. Carol Wade. His work at the cathedral was largely teaching, writing and spiritual direction. Forward Movement Publications published two collections of Fr. Horine's work, Larger than Life, and Stories, Tales and a Few Small Lies of a Country Parson. A third collection, January Court, was published by St. Michael's Press. His children's story, Akeem the Stupid Sheep, was used as a Christmas story in three parishes. His writing also appeared in Forward Day by Day and a number of other publications, including The Chevy Chaser and Interchange. He received awards from the Kentucky Press Association and the Episcopal Communicators. He is also survived by a son, Robert B. Horine III (Donna), Covington; a daughter, Virginia Catherine Allen (Chris), Lexington; a step-daughter, Molly Patrick Linker (John), Lexington; three grandsons, Robert B. Horine IV (Kristi) and Clark Edward Horine (Maranda), Covington; Benjamin Christopher Allen, Lexington; two granddaughters, Catherine Elaine Allen and Mary Kirk Allen, Lexington; a step-granddaughter, Lila Patrick Linker, Lexington, and a great-granddaughter, Lyla Joy Horine, Covington. Burial will be in the Lexington Cemetery. Donations are encouraged for the cathedral or God's Pantry.
