Joseph Henry Gaston, son of David Gaston and the former Mary "Polly" Toomey, was born August 20th 1854. Joseph was the youngest of seven children. His father died during the Civil War; while returning home after being wounded and held prisoner at the Battle of Vicksburg.

On January 17th 1875, Joseph married Miss Mary Melissa Floyd from Catoosa County, Georgia with whom he had four children; a daughter Cornelia, and three sons, William David, Joseph Stephen and Martin Van Buren. Joseph Henry Gaston was widely known throughout the state of Tennessee, as a promoter of fiddling contests.

For many years, Joseph Gaston owned a photography studio in Chattanooga. He was the first concessioner on Lookout Mountain and obtained a revocable license to operate a photograph gallery in Point Park in 1899.

Joseph Henry Gaston departed this life at the age of 72 on November 17th 1927. He was laid to rest beside his beloved wife of 51 years in Forest Hills Cemetery.
