Joseph Mills of the Calvary Marion County, KY Commiunity was living in the home of Cornelius and Dorothy (Raley) Raley in the 1850 Federal Census of Marion County, KY District II, household #480-480, page 482R, Sept. 23, 1850. Joseph was listed a 15 year old farmer who attended school in 1850. Others living in this home in 1850 besides Cornelius Raley, age 55, a MD born farmer with real estate valued at $7500, was his wife Doritha (sic) Raley, age 60, born MD; Susan Raley, 21, b. KY; and Joseph Mattingly, 25, a KY born farmer.

Joseph Mills, age 19, married Martha Jane Ewing, 1838-1877, daughter of: John Rueben and Eliza Jane (Abell) Ewing,at Holy [Name of] Mary Church, Marion County, KY on Oct. 17, 1854 in the presence of: Enoch Abell and Elizabeth Abell. They had at least one son John Thomas "Thomas" Mills, July 23,1855-Mar. 17, 1934, who married Lizzie Lee on Aug. 21, 1875 in Marion County, KY and one daughter Mary Josephine Mills, Aug. 10, 1857-xxxx.

Joseph Mills was murdered in a Bradfordsville, KY saloon between late 1856, when Mary Josephine was conceived, and Jan. 10, 1860 when his widow married George Washington Abell, Sr., 1836-1901. The family story says that he was struck by a bottle when the intended recipient ducked and that Joseph fell over--dead. Joseph has no tombstone in this cemetery. He was the grandfather of my uncle by marriage, Robert Abell Mills, 1899-1973.
