Queen Ester Mazeke-Simms, 66, of Bronx, Nw York entered the sunset of life on Saturday, December 23, 2000, at Harlem Hospital Center, New York City, following an acute illness.
A native of Palatka, she had resided in New York for the past 39 years. The daughter of James & Lillian (Cherry) Mazeke, Sr., she was a graduate of Central Academy High School Class of '50. She furthered her educational pursuit and was awarded a BA Degree at Edward Waters College, Jacksonville; BS Degree in Business Administration, Bethune-Cookman College, Daytona Beach. She was an educator in the Duval County School district and taught at Stanton High School in Jacksonville prior to moving to Bronx, New York. She was a dedicated employee of New York City at the Harlem Hospital Center for over 32 years. She was a devout member of Canaan Baptist Church of Christ, where she studied intensely under the Reverend Tee Walker and also served as President of the First Ladies Club.
In addition to her parents, her husband, Mike Simms, Sr. and her brothers, James Mazeke, Jr. and Emanuel "Manny" Boyd preceded her in eternal rest.
To cherish her precious memories are two sisters, Della Mae Cherry, West Palm Beach, Venetia McLemoure, Jacksonville; uncle, Wilson Mazeke, Jacksonville; a host of caring nieces and nephews, including Natalie Cherry, Angelo A. Cherry, West Palm Beach; Joy Jenkins, Charneta Scott, Jacksonville; Cavanna J. Jackson, Dallas, Texas, Hassan Boyd, New Jersey; a host of cousins including a devoted cousin, Pastor Rutha Murray, Palatka; and a host of other relatives and friends, especially her spiritual sister, Geraldine Moore, Bronx, N.Y., devoted Friend, Dorothy Moore, Miami.
Homegoing services will be Tuesday, January 2, 2001, 11 a.m. at the "Chapel of Serenity" with the Elder L. J. Hart officiating. Interment will be in Oak Hill West Cemetery. Visitation of family and friends will commence Monday, January 1, from 4-7 p.m. and Tuesday from 9-11 a.m. The cortege will assemble at Pastor Murray's residence, 716 North 19th Street, Palatka at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday.
