According to the 1880 census (which calls him Jerry) he was a farmer, 28 years old, farmer, born London to Irish-born parents, and lived in Harden township, Johnson County, Iowa with his wife Nora (25, born New York to Irish-born parents), son John (1, born Iowa) and hired hand George Leeney (15). In 1885 he was 33 years old, born England, occupation farmer, and lived in Johnson County, with his wife Honorah (34, New York) and their children (all born Johnson County): John (6), Timothy (4), Kattie (3), and George (1). The 1900 census states he was a widower, born December 1851 in England to Irish-born parents, occupation grade contractor, and lived at 2625 Cass street in Omaha, Nebr. with his brother John G. (born November 1858 England, teamster) and children (all born Iowa): John H. (March 1879, clerk), Timothy (February 1881, machinist), George L. (January 1884, teamster), Mary (May 1885), and Joseph (February 1887).

His burial card states he died June 17, 1901, age 50 years, and was buried June 19.
