CLOVIS, N.M. — Mrs. Romaine Marie (Rogers) Quaif Richer, 85, formerly of Cooperstown, died unexpectedly Saturday night, March 12, 2005, at The Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis, New Mexico.

Romaine was born Sept. 13, 1919, in Cooperstown, a daughter of Calvin L. and M. Leona (Billings) Rogers.

She was first married to Harry G. Quaif on June 27, 1938, in Cooperstown. Harry died July 14, 1963. She was then married to Clarence Richer on Sept. 14, 1968, in Cooperstown. Mr. Richer died Sept. 5, 1984.

Raised in the Cooperstown area, Romaine attended Cooperstown High School. Following her marriage, she was very active in her husband's plumbing and heating business in addition to raising their family and keeping their home, which was located on upper Main Street in Cooperstown. Following her husband's death, she was employed at J.J. Newberry's in Cooperstown and later moved to Milford. About 10 years ago, she moved first to Clovis, N.M., and then to Florida, where she lived in La Belle and later in Okeechobee. Two years ago, she returned to Clovis, which she greatly enjoyed.

Romaine possessed a great sense of humor and was not only "Mom" to her children, but was their buddy and best friend as well. She loved to sew, knit and crochet, and also enjoyed cooking for her family. She also enjoyed going for rides in her son's VW convertible and spending time with her cat, Muffin.

She is survived by two sons, Robert G. Quaif and his wife, Sheila, of Schaghticoke and Jack L. Quaif and his wife, Sharon, of Clovis, N.M.; two daughters, Jean Richards and her husband, Harry, of Clovis, N.M., and Susan R. Quaif and her companion, Dale Sullivan, of Cooperstown; one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Joann Quaif of Belmont, Miss.; one stepdaughter, Jenny Boss of Richfield Springs; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Sophie B. Rogers and Mrs. Helen R. Rogers, both of Cooperstown; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to both her husbands, she was predeceased by one son, Gerald ("Jerry") Quaif, who died two months ago, and two brothers, Carlton C. Rogers, who died July 15, 1979, and Gerald W. Rogers, who died Nov. 26, 1989.

A funeral service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 18, at the Charles V. Steed Memorial Chapel at the Steed-Todd Funeral Home in Clovis, N.M., with the Rev. Ron Eggleton officiating.

A graveside service will take place at a later date in Fly Creek Valley Cemetery.
