Obituary from the Edwardsville Intelligencer, Wednesday, September 14, 1921:
William H. Head, life time resident of Edwardsville, passed away yesterday afternoon at 5:40 after an illness of only ten days, at the home of his son, Frank Head, who resides at 1615 N. Main street. Mr. Head had been feeble for sometime and his death was due mostly to old age.
Mr. Head was a native of Edwardsville and was born here on April 14, 1840. At the time of his death he was 81 years, 5 months and 13 days. He was a member of the G.A.R. and served three years during the Civil War. He was a member of Company F, 117 Illinois Regiment. His parents were J. Bigger and Nancy Head, early settlers in this city.
As a boy Mr. Head attended the country schools and was interested in farming for some years. He was watchman at the old Keller Bros. Mill which burned down years ago, for a period of ten years. For the past twenty-five years he had been employed in the cabinet department of the N.O. Nelson Mfg. Co.
He was married in 1865 to Miss Elvira Amanda Lewis at the Methodist church by a Rev. Greene. Five children were born to the union of which Frank Head of this city is the only survivor. His wife preceded him in death 14 years ago. He is also survived by one brother who formerly resided at Oakland, Cal. He has not been heard from for several years and the family are unable to locate him.
Besides his son Frank Head, with whom he resided, he is survived by five grandchildren, Hugh, Dorothy, and Miss Gertrude Head, Miss Lillian Voyles and Oscar Ficker. His one grandson, Oscar Ficker is in New York and was informed of the death by telegram.
The funeral services will be held at the residence Thursday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, Rev. A.F. Ludwig of the Immanuel M.E. church officiating. The G.A.R. Post will be in attendance. Interment will be in the Woodlawn cemetery.
Mr. Head was a kind husband, a loving and considerate father, and a good citizen. He was a familiar figure in Edwardsville and will be missed by his many friends and acquaintances.
