John Lotus Dean was born in the state of Indiana on September 27th 1899 to Jesse and Emily Dean. During the World War he was assigned to Company A of the 23rd Engineers, and sailed to France on January 23rd 1918. John served near the frontline throughout the latter half of 1918 and was involved in the Battle of St. Mihiel and the Meuse-Argonne Offensive. Our photograph was taken in France, and is dated August 11th 1918. John returned to the United States on June 9th 1919 aboard the S.S. Winifredian, and was honorably discharged shortly thereafter. His service number was 177,014. John married Harriet Elsie Lanpher on September 2nd 1922, and had two sons born in 1923 and 1926. He worked as a blacksmith for the remainder of his life, and passed at the age of 71 of a heart attack on May 14th 1971 in Plainfield, Indiana. He is buried with his wife in the Washington Park East Cemetery of Indianapolis, Indiana.
