Rev. Russell Charles Gromest, of Hanover, passed away November 1, 2012. He was the loving husband, for 44 years of, Judith Ann (Otto) Gromest who died August 12, 2010.

Born February 20, 1939 in Jersey City, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Charles A. and Dorothy W. (Spink) Gromest.

Rev. Gromest graduated from Leonia High School in New Jersey in 1956 and later served in the United States Army Medical Corps from 1957 to 1960. He graduated from Wagner College, Staten Island, NY in 1963. He then graduated from the Lutheran Theological Seminary, Philadelphia in May of 1966 and was ordained a Lutheran Pastor that same year.

He went on to serve the following Lutheran congregations; Zion, Oldwick, NJ, 1966-1973, St. Paul, Millville, NJ, 1974-1979, Faith, Hillsborough, NJ, 1979-1987 and Resurrection, Hamilton Square, NJ, 1987 - until his retirement in 2004.

Rev. Gromest was a U.S. Army Reserve Chaplain in the 78th Div. from 1968 to 1974. He also created two volunteer police chaplaincies in Millville, NJ and Hillsborough, NJ and was instrumental in getting the NJ State law changed so that clergymen could serve as volunteer police chaplains without rank or pay.

Russell enjoyed playing the saxophone and played in several bands throughout his life. Rev. Gromest also loved the game of baseball and followed the New York Mets since they were organized in 1962, and the Washington Nationals since 2008.

He was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church after moving to Hanover in 2006.

His survivors include two children, Dawn Swann, Philadelphia, and Alan Gromest, Washington, DC; two grandchildren, Joshua and Ryan Swann; a sister, Phyllis Ann Teats, Franklin Lakes, NJ; and a brother, Kenneth R. Gromest, Greenville, SC.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Aurea Lopez Gromest, who died in December 1963.

A service to celebrate the life of Rev. Russell C. Gromest will be held at 1 p.m., November 5th at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 30 W. Chestnut St., Hanover, with Rev. Dr. Daniel M. Yeiser officiating. A time to share memories with the family and an opportunity to view will be on Sunday from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Wetzel Funeral Home, Hanover, and again on Monday from 12 noon until the time of service at the church. Burial will be in Rest Haven Cemetery, Hanover, where the U.S. flag, honoring his faithful service, will be presented to the family by the Hanover Allied Veterans Honor Guard.
