Reverend Leon C. Atwell was born in Louisville, Kentucky, October 11, 1914, he was the first of twelve children of Lonnie and Evie Atwell. He always remarked that there are no big families any longer, only small samples. Leon was ordained February 23, 1946. He received his Theological training at Anderson College, Anderson, Indiana now Anderson University. He served as Pastor to churches in Indiana and Oklahoma and preached nationally and internationally. It was with joy that he served the Shartel Church of God in Oklahoma City for twenty years. He spoke at the Anderson Camp Meeting on 6 occasions. He was proud to be chosen for this task by his peers in his beloved church. He served the church on committees and boards in state and national offices. He served 23 years on the Publications Board of Warner Press as Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors. Leon loved traveling with his wife Lil. He made one worldwide preaching tour and visited missionary friends in Africa, Asia and elsewhere. Leon enjoyed family dinners in part for the chance to be with those he loved and also because he loved good cooking. He was transformed from body to pure spirit on November 27, 2002. He died as he had lived, peacefully and surrounded by family. Leon is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lillie, 'The love of my life,' and his 'Two darling daughters' Rachel Whelan and Carol Teague and their husbands Michael Whelan and James Testerman all of Oklahoma City. Leon was the oldest of twelve children. He is survived by two Brothers Glenn and Claudie Atwell and four Sisters Edith Compton, Mildred Patterson, Sybil Webster and Maydean Curry all of Kentucky. He has eight Grandchildren, Janna Morris, Cynthia Janssen, Kim Schlecht, Brent Heflin, Randy Coleman, Shannon Rogers, Sean Whelan and Daniel Whelan and Seventeen Great Grandchildren Jacob and Joey Sons of Janna and David Morris, Emily, David and Elliott children of Cynthia and Thomas Janssen, M.D., Hilary , Andrew, Ethan and Jillian children of Kim and James Schlecht, Brandon, Erick and Cameron sons of Brent and Dana Heflin, and Daniel, Megan, Caitlin, and Sam children of Randy Coleman and Cassandra, daughter of Shannon Rogers. Services will be held at Crossings Community Church on Mon. Dec. 2, 2002 at 11:00 A.M. Family will receive friends at Vondel L. Smith and Son Mortuary , 13125 N. MacArthur in Oklahoma City on Sunday evening between 6:00 and 8:00 PM. Entombment will be at Resurrection Memorial Cemetery Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers please remember, Crossings Community Church, Mid America Bible College, Mercy Hospital Hospice all of whom were very supportive in Leon'stransition. VONDEL L.
