In Fall River Dec 01, 1964, Reverend Edward J. Gorman, son of the late Joseph H. and Mary A. nee Galligan Gorman. Body will lie in state in Catholic Memorial Home, Fall River, Tuesday. High mass of requiem in the chapel at 7 a.m. Body will lie in state in St. Mary's Rectory, Taunton from 2 p.m. Wednesday until 3 p.m. Thursday. Office of the Dead will be chanted at 4 p.m. in St. Mary's Church. A solemn Pontifical Mass will be sung Friday Dec 04 at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to be present. Interment in St. Francis Cemetery.

Edward Joseph Gorman, a native of Taunton and superintendant of schools of the Fall River Roman Catholic Diocese, for 30 years until his retirement over two years ago, died unexpectedly in the Catholic Memorial Home in Fall River this morning. He was 62. He had lived in the home since Sep 1962 when he retired because of illness. Son of the late Joseph Henry Gorman and Mary Agnes (Galligan) Gorman, he attended St. Mary's Elementary and High schools in Taunton and graduated from the latter in 1921. He attended Holy Cross College for two years, then entered St. Mary's Seminary, Baltimore, MD to study philosophy. He continued his philosophy studies at the Catholic University, Washington, DC, and was ordained into the priesthood Jun 10, 1929 by the Most Rev. Thomas J. Shanhan at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, Washington. His first parish was Our Lady of the Isle, Nantucket.
Father Gorman was appointed curate of the Holy Rosary Church, Fall River in Oct 1929 where he remained until Apr 1930. He then went to St. Patrick's Church as a curate under the late Bishop James E. Cassidy, then pastor in that church. Father Gorman returned to the Catholic University in Sep 1931 for educational studies, and was appointed superintendent of diocesan schools in Jun 1932 by Bishop Cassidy. He served in this capacity until his retirement.
Father Gorman, holder of a Bachelor of Sacred Theology degree and a Master of Arts degree in education was transferred to St. Mary's Cathedral, Fall River while serving as superintendent and remained until 1938. He had served as chaplain in the Rose Hawthorne Cancer Home and became chaplain of the Catholic Memorial Home where he served until his appointment as administrator to St. Patrick's Church, Somerset in Jul 1961.
Until his retirement, he was diocesan director of Confraternity of Christian Doctrine, member of the Nation Catholic Welfare Conference Bureau of Information, secretary for the diocesan board for the League Decency and Movie Pictures, and the national organization for Decency in Literature.
