James married Cecilia Lorene Payne, daughter of Alphonsus Conen Payne and Thomas Evelyn "Evaline" Lanham about 1957.

James A. "Jim" Mattingly died Wednesday, Oct. 31, 2012, after a lengthy illness surrounded by his family and friends. He was born Jan. 14, 1938, was a lifelong member of St. William Catholic Church, a Kentucky Colonel, former owner of Mattingly's Grocery and retired from Daviess Fiscal Court where he was manager of the Dr. Carl Henry Animal Shelter. Jim loved watching his children and grandchildren participate in sports, liked to barbecue, work in the garden and was a true New York Yankees fan. He was preceded in death by two sons, Mike and Randy Mattingly; a granddaughter, Erica Lynn Mattingly; his parents, Firman and Virginia Mattingly; two brothers, W.H. (Bach) and Junie Mattingly, of Knottsville; and a sister, Tean Mattingly, of Louisville. He is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years, Lorene, a son, Tim (Debbie) Mattingly, and two daughters, Connie (Gary) Lemmons, all of Knottsville, and Gail Niehaus, of Owensboro; a daughter-in-law, Sheila Mattingly of Whitesville; 15 grandchildren, Natali (Brandon) Hall, Cecile Payne, Robbi Payne, Carman (Richard) Roberts, Billy Lemmons, Kecia Aud, Katherine Lemmons, Tabatha (Danny) Roberts, Michael (Nicole) Mattingly, Krystal (Jonathon) Roebuck, Shawn Lanham, Dillon Mattingly, Blake Mattingly, Tyler Mattingly and Mackenzie Mattingly; 24 great-grandchildren; a sister, Betty Miller of Owensboro; and several nieces and nephews. Each and every, child, grandchild and great-grandchild were assured that they were "Poppie's favorite." Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. William Catholic Church in Knottsville. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday and after 8 a.m. Saturday at Cecil Funeral Home in Whitesville where prayers will be at 5 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. William Cemetery.
