WILLIAM J. BRENDEL DEAD

William J. Brendel died Friday afternoon at 3:15, at his home, after an illness of several months with dropsy and cancer of the stomach. The end came peacefully and without pain, and he expressed himself ready to go.

William J. Brendel was born in Beardstown, Ill., February 26, 1852. He was of German parentage, the son of Frederick and Mary [Gunkel] Brendel. The family lived but a short time in Illinois, returning to their former home in Morgan county, Indiana, where they lived until 1856. That year they came by wagon to Kansas, and settled south of the Cottonwood river, eight miles southeast of town, near the Humphrey Ford. The Brendels moved to southeast Missouri in 1860, and William came again to Kansas in the early seventies. In 1877 he rented the farm of the late John Strain, five miles southeast of Emporia in the Fowler neighborhood, and the agreement was made that his home should be with the Strain family. This agreement never was changed, and his home with the Strains has been as much a real home as if he had been of their own flesh and blood. He was kind and thoughtful of the comfort of the members of the family, and they gave him the respect and the affection that his consideration deserved. Mr. Strain died in 1902, and the son, William Strain in 1911. There are left only Mrs. Strain, and her daughter, Miss Dollie Strain, who gave to Mr. Brendel in his long illness tender, unremitting care. No mother and sister could have done more for him.

Mr. Brendel was one of a family of twelve children, nine of whom grew to maturity. His sisters are Mrs. Elizabeth French, of Emporia; Mrs. Caroline Nutt, of Selma, Iowa; Mrs. John Gunkel, of Portersville, Calif.; Mrs. Permelia Umfleet, of Zalma, Mo.; his only surviving brother is Frank F. Brendel, of Turlock, Calif. There are many relatives in this community.

Mr. Brendel lived a quiet, ostentatious life, believing in doing well in whatever came to his hand. He made a place for himself, and "Billy" Brendel held the respect and esteem of everyone who knew him. He suffered greatly for months, and his chief concern was to lighten as much as possible the burden of those who cared for him. He was a good man and a good citizen, and will be greatly missed.
