Garret Ward Darland, who is buried in New Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery, was the son of Garret Dorland originally a member of the Old Mud Meeting House in Harrodsburg, born in 1750 in Somerset County, New Jersey, removed with the Harlingen Dutch Reformed Congregation to Conewago, near Gettysburg, where they established a Low Dutch Community and Church, then to Mercer County, Kentucky by 1790, Trustee for the Low Dutch Company, Commissioner, Judge of Elections and a Justice of the Mercer County, Courts from 1795-1798. Resided on Azariah's Run until later in life when he and others from the Old Mud Meeting House moved near New Providence. Garret Dorland, Daniel Brewer and Lanty Armstrong, his sons in law, hired Rev. Thomas Cleland as pastor in Oct. of 1812.
He married his first wife Jannetje Hall by 1774, he had four daughters: Lammmetje born 1774; Doorti or Theodosia b. 1775, married Daniel Brewer, Styntje or Tiny born 1779 married Lanty Armstrong, and Jannetje born 1785, married John Gaunt, then Samuel Eccles. His second wife was Jane Montgomery, the mother of Garret Ward Darland.
Garret Dorland is buried in an unmarked grave in New Providence Presbyterian Cemetery.
