Catherine "Kitty" Croft Clevenger, 89, of Chester, died peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family on October 30.
Born on October 17, 1923 in Lynch, KY, she was the daughter of the late James E. Croft and Carrie Mae Humphries. Kitty grew up in Crofton, KY and was a graduate of Crofton High School. She met and married her future husband, Buddy Clevenger, while he was stationed at Fort Campbell. After his discharge from the Army, the couple moved to the Eastern Shore and made their home in Grasonville. Kitty helped her husband run his company, Clevenger Oil Co. and co-owned and operated the KOA Campground in Grasonville, MD, which is now known as Beach Harbor. Kitty later worked in the Grasonville Post Office and, when Queen Anne's County High School opened in the mid-1960s, she became the school secretary, a position she held until the late 1970s. Kitty was a real estate agent along with her husband at Clevenger Realty in Grasonville. From 1978 until 2002, she served as a Judge of the Orphans Court in Queen Anne's County.
Kitty was an early member of the Prospect Bay Country Club, where she was president of the 18 Holers, a member of the Kent Island Yacht Club, the Ladies Auxiliary of VFW #7464, was a Knights of Pythias Sister and helped found the Queen Anne's County Homemakers Club. She worked tirelessly to raise funds for the founding of the Grasonville Volunteer Fire Department, and was an active member of Immanuel United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school. Kitty enjoyed golfing and trips to the casinos, and was an accomplished bridge player and seamstress.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Buddy, in 1998; her daughter, Deborah L. Jones; and her brother, James E. Croft, Jr. She is survived by her son, Frank E. Clevenger (Carole) of Queenstown; her daughters, Patricia A. Niehus (James) of Annapolis, and Suzanne Ponciroli of Brentwood, TN; her brother, Lewis E. Croft of Crofton, KY; 14 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.
