Corporal Cheppa was a Veteran of World War II. In Korea, he was a member of the 38th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division. He was seriously wounded in South Korea on September 12, 1950 and returned to duty on September 21, 1950. On November 30, 1950, when his platoon was pinned down by an enemy ambush near Kunu-ri, North Korea, he took a jeep with a mortar and silenced enemy machine guns, saving many comrades' lives. For his leadership and valor, Corporal Cheppa was awarded the Silver Star, the Purple Heart, the Combat Infantryman's Badge, the Korean Service Medal, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal.
