He is the son of Joseph and Catherine/Leah (Lehr) Muthler. He is the husband of Victoria Henrietta (Peters) Muthler.

On 30 March 1925 the Lock Haven Express in the section, Death Record, appears the obituary of John Muthler. It reads: John Muthler was found dead in his bed at his farm home a mile east of Jersey Shore by his son, George, at 6 o'clock Sunday morning. He had not been in good health since he sustained a stroke four years ago which left him partially paralyzed. Later diabetes and other complications developed, but he felt no worse than usual when he retired Saturday night. Mr. Muthler was born in Lock Haven September 29, 1857, and when a young man assisted his father, Joseph Muthler, operating canal boats through this section. He moved on a farm in Beech Creek Township in 1889 and remained there until 1917, when he
purchased the farm east of Jersey Shore, where he resided until his death. Deceased is survived by is wife, three sons and two daughters. Joseph C., and George A., at home; Mrs. John Smith, and Robert., Beech Creek Township and Mrs. Boyd Phillips, of Tangascootac; a brother, Fred, Beech Creek, and two sisters, Mrs. Adam C. Earon, Beech Creek, and Mrs. John Beaver, this city, also survive, and he leaves fourteen grandchildren. The funeral will leave the house near Jersey Shore Wednesday afternoon at 1 o'clock for Fairpoint, where services will be conducted in the Methodist Church at 2:45 o'clock. Internment will be made in Allen's (Sunneyside) Cemetery.
