Samuel Edward Stiteler was born January 11, 1833 in Pennsylvania. He was the son of Joseph and Mary Beamer Stiteler, and the fifth of ten children. He was raised in Blair County, Pennsylvania.

Samuel E. Stiteler married Elizabeth Williams on October 15, 1854 in Silver Spring, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. In 1860, they resided in Tyrone Township, Blair County, Pennsylvania. Samuel and Elizabeth had four children: Augustus Miller Stiteler (1856-1856); Warren Woodward Stiteler (1857-1920); John A. Stiteler (1859-); and Samuel Edward "Sammy" Stiteler (1861-1954).

Samuel enlisted in Company E, Pennsylvania 61st Infantry Regiment on August 1, 1861 as a private. He served as a musician. He was wounded in the Battle of Fair Oaks, Virginia, May 31, 1862. His regiment, commanded by Brig. Gen. J.J. Abercombie, was nearly decimated in this battle. He died June 3, 1862 from wounds in Confederate hands in Richmond, Virginia.
