JUDGE HINES PASSES AWAY AT HOME

Widely Known Resident Of City Had Been Ill Several Months

GRANDUATED FROM OGDEN


Samuel D. Hines, prominent Bowling Green resident widely known throughout this section, died yesterday morning at 11:20 o'clock at his residence at 1218 State street after an illness of several months with a complication of diseases.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at 10:30 o'clock from the residence with the services in charge of the Rev. Charles G. Leavell, rector of Christ Episcopal Church. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery with the members of the Bowling Green Lodge of Elks in charge of the services at the grave.

Mr. Hines was born in Bowling Green on July 10, 1868 and was a son of the late James Davis Hines and Hallie Thomas Hines.

Graduated from Ogden
He graduated from Ogden College in this city and later attended the University of Virginia.

For 20 years Mr. Hines engaged in the insurance business in this city, operating under the firm name of S.D. Hines & Company. He took much interest in public affairs and held several positions of trust during his lifetime.

Until recently, he was a member of the City Board of Education and he also served a term as Deputy Clerk of the Kentucky court of Appeals and as formerly Police Judge of the City of Bowling Green.

He married Miss Josie Underwood, who survives with two sons, Harold K. Hines of Tell City, Ind., and Lieutenant Underwood Hines, U.S.N., who is now stationed at Annapolis. His sons were at his bedside when death occurred.

He is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. John B. Rodes of this city, and Mrs. Hughes Waller of Orlando, Fla.

He was an active member of the Christ Episcopal Church, serving as vestryman for several years.

He was also a member of the local order of Elks and the XV Club.

Rites Are In Charge of Rev. Charles G. Leavell, Of Episcopal Church


Funeral services for Samuel D. Hines who died Sunday were held from the residence at 1218 State street this morning at 10:30 by the Rev. C.G. Leavell, rector of Christ Episcopal Church. Interment followed in Fairview Cemetery.

The active pallbearers were: Henry D. Hines, Lucius Squier, Gaston Coke, John Stout, S.C. Cook, Will J. Turpin, Edwin C. Claypool, Edward Covington and Houston Porter.

Hines and Mrs. Mason Houghland of Nashville; Douglas Bolling of Owensboro; Mrs. Edwin Norris of Great Falls, Mont.; Mrs. Herbert McPherson of Hopkinsville; Carl Beutenback of Louisville and Frank J. Nolan of Chattanooga.

The fire insurance company offices of the city were closed during the funeral hour as a mark of respect to Mr. Hines who for 20 years conducted a leading insurance agency in the city.
