"James C. Smith, one of Richmondville's highly respected residents, passed away at his home Friday at 2 o'clock, a. m., after a few hours' illness. Thursday morning, while at the meat market, he was seized with a serious attack of fainting. He was carried to his home and a physician summoned. At first it was thought that he was dead, but he responded to medical treatment and soon grew better. About 9 a. m., he again grew worse, the trouble appearing in the form of bronchial pneumonia, from which he grew worse until 2 a. m., Friday, when he expired. He was 67 tears if age ... When a young man he entered in the Civil war and served three years with his regiment, gaining rank and honor by his bravery. He was a member of the Baptist church and had the name of being the poor man's friend, as he was never known to say no to calls for assistance. His sudden death is a source of regret to a large circle of friends and neighbors with whom he has so long been associated. He had been a member of the Odd Fellows lodge for 38 years. He is survived by his widow and two sons, Raymond of Richmondville and Miner C. of Hartford, Conn. Funeral services were held from the baptist church on Sunday at 2 p. m."
