Early Christmas morning while the community was just beginning to enter upon a day of gladness and cheer, the home of the Whinerys, 1625-6th Ave., was saddened by the death of Henry M. Whinery at the age of 73 years. Mr. Whinery has been very ill for a number of weeks so that this passing was not unexpected, but even then his deprature leaves an aching void in the hearts of all his loved ones.

Mr. Whinery was the third son of Mr. and Mrs. James Whinery and was born in Clinton county, Ohio, June 7, 1851. He moved to Iowa in 1868 and was married to Miss Elda Kinzer in Marshall county, October 22nd, 1874. He had the great joy of living to celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary. On this occasion his home was filled with their many relatives and friends who had gathered to express their congratulations. Mr. Whinery was remarkabley well and cheerful that evening and everyone remarked that he was the life of the company.

The active business life of Henry Whinery was spent in Ida Grove, and Des Moines, Iowa. Wihle living in these communities he was a banker and was interested in a number of banking institutions throughout northwest Iowa. All who knew him considered him a man of keenest business sagacity and the soul of honor. To the last week of his life he was interested in business life and kept his accounts and wrote his checks, only giving up when his hand was unable to hold a pencil.

Mr. Whinery was very much interested in religion and religious activities. He was a birth-right member of the Friends church in which organization he was an official leader and for a period of more than thirty years was superintendent of the Sudnay School or teacher in a Bible class. It was the joy of his life to lead many into the Christian experience. Children everywhere knew him and loved him and were wonderfully attracted by his beaming countenance. To have known him is never to forget the smile which shone out from his eyes revealing the big heart of kindness which he always carried within. In later years Mr. and Mrs. Whinery united with the Methodist church and have lived faithful and consistent Christians. The local church will miss him in the Coutts Sunday School class of which he was a member and the pastor will miss that inspiring and winsome face in the congregation. He talked with the Lord just as a friend talks to his friend, face to face. He was a member of A.F. & A.M.; the Knights Templar and the Shrine, keeping his Masonic relationship in Ida Grove, Iowa.

Four children were born to bless the home of Mr. and Mrs. Whinery, two having preceded their father in death, James and Pauline. The two others, Fred J. of Grinnell and Cuma, Mrs. Pettell of Vashou, Washington, with his wife remain to mourn the loss of a devoted father and husband. Besides he has a brother Alpheus of Aurelia, Iowa, and a sister, Mrs. Willets of Des Moines.

The funeral will be held at the Methodist Church Saturday afternoon, Dec. 27 at 2:30 and will be conducted by his pastor, Rev. Wm. J. Todd. Interment will be in Hazelwood.
