Joan Webster McIntire Ryan, 76
Nursing director; ski instructor; volunteer

HARWICH — Joan Webster McIntire Ryan passed away on Oct. 25, 2009, after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was the daughter of the late Col. Lewis and Gladys McIntire of Harwich.
Joan was born on Feb. 2, 1933, in the city of Springfield. She and her sister Carol attended high school overseas, where their father was stationed during World War II. Joan graduated high school in Okinawa, Japan.
Upon returning stateside, Joan attended the Henry W. Bishop 3rd Memorial School of Nursing in Pittsfield. She graduated in the class of 1954.
As a devoted mother, she learned to ski so she could spend time with her two sons. She loved the sport so much she became a ski instructor.
Her main love was nursing, which she fulfilled with great dedication and compassion. She was the director of Nursing Services at the Avon Convalescent Home, where she worked for more than 20 years. In her later years, she dedicated her time and efforts to helping others.
In Connecticut, she was a vital member of the Lions Club Unionville, Conn., chapter. She later joined the Harwich chapter. She volunteered to teach visually impaired typing and computers, as well as volunteering her time with hospice care patients. She was also a member of the local Harwich Knitting Club.
She is survived by two sons, Peter Ryan of Westford, and Steve Ryan of Park City, Utah; a sister, Carol Hurlbert of California; several nieces and nephews; and three grandchildren, to whom she devoted much of her love and time.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2009, at 11:30 a.m., at the First Congregational Church in Harwich Center.

Joan was a giving, kind, and compassionate woman who will be greatly missed by her family, friends and those whose lives she touched. One of her last requests was that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to the Brooks Library VITAL Services.
