William "Coach" "Bull" Dawson, 84, Henderson, passed away at 6:10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville.

He was a member of The Presbyterian Church of Henderson. He was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran from June 1943 to April 1946, having served in the Pacific. He was a 1943 graduate of Manual High School in Louisville and a graduate of the University of Kentucky, where he played football under Paul "Bear" Bryant. His team was the 1950 National Champions, the 1950 Sectional Champions and the 1951 Sugar Bowl Champions. He also received a Master's Degree and Rank I from Western Kentucky University.

In the fall of 1951, he became a teacher at Morganfield Middle School and served as the head football coach of the Morganfield Guerillas. In the fall of 1960, he became the assistant principal at Henderson City High School and also the head football coach for the Henderson City High Flash. In 1974, he retired as the head football coach at Henderson City High School. After the 1977 merger of Henderson County High School and Henderson City High School, he became the assistant principal at Henderson County High School, from which he retired in 1988. He was a member of the Barkley Lake Fun Timers Bass Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Inez Dawson.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Mary Lou Dawson; two daughters, Lynn Buckman and her husband, Scott, and Becky Dawson, both of Henderson; three granddaughters, Shannon Elliott and her husband, Thomas, Mary Buckman and Sarah Buckman; two great-grandchildren, Jacy Elliott and Blake Dawson Elliott.

Services will be at noon Saturday at The Presbyterian Church of Henderson. The Rev. John Guthrie will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, with full military rites performed by American Legion Worsham Post No. 40.

Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Rudy-Rowland Funeral Home and after 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to The Presbyterian Church of Henderson or Henderson County High School for a scholarship in the memory of Coach Bull Dawson.

Pallbearers will be Mike Bussiere, Dennis Callahan, Phil Collins, Solomon Dudley, Daniel Aloysius Evans Sr., Daniel Aloysius Evans Jr., Mike Herron and Ron Jenkins.

Honorary pallbearers will be Howard Crittenden, Joan Hoffman, Lewis Snowden and the Morganfield Guerillas and Henderson City Flash football players whom he coached from 1951 to 1973.
