Charles' father Ebenezer was killed by a falling tree limb on 7 Apr 1837 not long after the family's move from near Pawling, NY to the Westfield area. Charles died about a year and four months later of an unknown cause. The old burying ground where they were buried eventually became neglected, abandoned, and was eventually cleared. Today the area, which resembles a small park, can be reached through the McDonald's parking lot from Main St. The area contains a plaque that reads:

THE OLD BURYING GROUND
WESTFIELD, NY

Deeded to the Presbyterian Church in 1821 by Col. James Mc Mahan, first settler in Chautauqua County. Among those buried here were some of the county's early pioneers.

"MAY THEY REST IN PEACE WITH HONOR"
