Paul D. Pickering, 82, Defiance died Thursday, July 30, 2009, in CHP Defiance Area In-Patient Hospice Center, Defiance.
Paul was born May 31, 1927, in Defiance, the son of Oscar and Ruth (Whetstone) Pickering.
He was a 1945 graduate of Defiance High School and attended Defiance College. He married Betty J. Webb on August 8, 1954, at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, Defiance. He was a U.S. Army veteran and was honorably discharged in December, 1946. Paul was an active member of the Trinity United Methodist Church. He served as a church trustee, Sunday school teacher, member of the church administrative board, music committee and numerous other committees.
He was a 60-year member of the church choir. His avid love of music carried over to his 40-year membership in the Northwesternaires Barbershop Chorus of Defiance. Other memberships included the VFW 3360, Omega Masonic Lodge, Ensawoca Chapter 89, Defiance York Rite Association, Zenobia Shriners, 32nd Degree Mason Scottish Rite, Valley of Toledo, and a former member of the Defiance Elks Lodge. Paul was a draftsman in the plant engineering department for General Motors for 14 years. He also worked in sales for many years, retiring from Defiance Memorials in 1991.
He is survived by his wife, Betty; son, David of Defiance; daughter, Patricia (Peter) Kasper of of Milton, Vt.; and grandchildren, Paul and Katherine Kasper of Milton, Vt.
Preceding him in death were his parents; sister, Eunice Towne; daughter-in-law, Kathy Pickering; and niece, Nancy Dershem.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 3, 2009, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Defiance with Rev. George Reed officiating. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery, Defiance.
Visitation will be today from 2-8 p.m. at Mast-Mock Hoffman HanenkrathClevenger-Schaffer Funeral Home and one hour before services at the church on Monday. A Masonic service will be held today at 7 p.m.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the CHP Defiance Area In-Patient Hospice Center or Trinity United Methodist Church.
