the Carroll Journal, Carrollton, Ohio, Thursday, August 4, 1938.

Dr. Charles R. Ziegler, 88, oldest practicing physician in Carroll County and one of Carrollton's best beloved citizens, died at 8:40 Saturday evening, July 30, at his home on North Lisbon Street. Death was attributed to a heart attack induced by the effects of a fall at his home on July 22. Dr. Ziegler was graduated from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 1874 and first began the practice of medicine at Chatfield, Crawford County. In 1885 he removed to Carrollton, where he succeeded Dr. W. O. Skeeles, a brother-in-law of the late Harvey J. Eckley. Dr. Ziegler was born May 1, 1850 at Sulphur Springs, Crawford County, a son of George R. and Susanna (Beard) Ziegler. his father was a physician before him. Dr. Ziegler was also a graduate of Capital University, Columbus. In 1900 Dr. Ziegler formed a partnership with Dr. A. H. Hise, his brother-in-law. Upon the death of the latter in 1927, Dr. Ziegler carried on the practice. His office was in the Sterling building on North Lisbon Street, a location he held continuously for 53 years. He relinquished his lease only last April, but continued his professional work from his residence up to the evening of his fall. At the time of death Dr. Ziegler was county physician, a position he held for 30 years.
Dr. Ziegler's 64 years of medical practice bridged the gap between the old-time country doctor and the methods of the modern practitioner. He came up from the days when the physician was strictly on his own, under trying circumstances. He had no trained nurses to assist him, and modern hospitals were not within easy reach. In the home he was aided only by the willing but clumsy efforts of the patient's family and kind neighbors. But always he carried on. If he succeeded, he rejoiced; if he failed, he grieved. One saw him go by in his buggy, through the dust of summer and the mud and snow of winter, to return to an office filled with patients, to whom he ministered and returned to the road for other visitations. Of such was Dr. Ziegler. The kindly ways and cheerful disposition he took into the homes of his patients lent potency to his medicines and added much, in courage and hope in driving back the grim reaper. Dr. and Mrs. Ziegler celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary on November 9, 1937. They were married at Carrollton November 9, 1876, the ceremony being performed by Rev. Emanuel Cronenwett, a noted Lutheran minister and brother-in-law of Mrs. Ziegler. Dr. Ziegler was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a member of the Carroll County Medical Society. Only three weeks ago Dr. Ziegler resigned as local surgeon for the Wheeling & Lake Erie Railroad, a position he held continuously since 1885. The good that Dr. Ziegler has done during his long years of practice can never be told, neither can it be measured in worldly wealth. Naturally kind and sympathetic, he accepted the responsibility of his profession and gave freely of his time and services in hundreds of cases without hope of remuneration. He will be remembered for his unselfish devotion, his shrewd sense of humor, his personal sacrifice and his admirable Christian character.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Loretta (Helfrich) Ziegler and one daughter, Mrs. Erna Winings, of Carrollton. Two brothers preceded him in death; also two sisters, Mrs. J. B. Wert and Mrs. A. H. Hise. Funeral services were conducted at the late residence at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, followed by services at Trinity Lutheran Church at 2. Rev. Earl Stainbrook, the pastor, officiated. Interment was made in Grandview Cemetery with Arbaugh & Son in charge.
