the Carroll Chronicle, Carrollton, Ohio, Friday, January 4, 1889.

Lotz--Kail--married January 1, 1889, Mr. Howard Lotz of Carrollton to Miss Maggie Kail of Perrysville, at the residence of S. W. Thompson.

Howard's obituary in the Carroll Chronicle, Carrollton, Ohio, Friday, September 13, 1901.

One of the most noteworthy events of the year was the death of Howard Lotz Saturday morning last at 3 o'clock, following the death of his wife five days and death of his father five weeks. The woes of that family have come so fast "they tread on each other's heels."
Few deaths have occurred that have impressed the writer of this with more profound regret. We had known him since 1867, when he was our pupil and a wide-awake boy. We had known his father and his children intimately and well. In their deaths we have last two near friends that have touched our hearts. In the triple death in that family there is a sorrow among all relatives and friends that will long be remembered. Well and truly do they say: "Howard is gone; there is no one to take his place." The universal esteem in which he was held was shown by the directors and officers of the county agricultural society when they attended his funeral in a body. It is some satisfaction to known that his little children will be kindly cared for by their grandmother Kail and her son Jesse who will all live together for the present in the old home.
Rev. Rothenberger, pastor of the Reform church, furnishes the following: Howard Milo Lotz was born December 24, 1860, and spent his life in the immediate neighborhood of his birth. Early in life he united with Trinity Reformed Church of Carrollton, of which he was an earnest and faithful member, and held an official position at the time of his death.
January 1, 1889, he united in marriage with Margaret Kail. To this union there were born two children, Nellie and Loren, who remain and under the care of grandma Kail, with out father or mother, enter the way of life alone quite young.
The past summer was one of peculiar trial for Mr. Lotz. Since the month of May his wife was confined to her bed with fever, weakness and often severe pain. During the day he worked hard on the farm and at night ministered to her care and comfort. In the meantime his father took ill and died. Hope began to waver in regard to the restoration of the wife of his youth. He too was confined to his bed on the 23rd of August. On the 2nd of September the wife died and was buried on the 4th. From that day on he was worse. Friday, the 6th, he made a will giving direction for his property and making provision for his children, and died the following night--aged 40 years, 8 months and 12 days. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon, September 8, 1901. The attendance was unusually large, only about one-half of the people being able to get into the church for the funeral services. It was also an occasion of peculiar sympathy and tenderness, as but few of the many that were present could control their emotions and refrain from weeping.
The death of Howard Lotz has left a vacancy. He will be missed in the neighborhood, on the street, in the agricultural society of the county, in the church, and by his many friends and sorrowing children.
