His obituary was published on 21 Jul 1887 in Sandy Creek Twp, Mercer, PA, USA.
Died On July 12, 1887, Asher Minnis aged 72 years, 2 months and 15 days. Deceased was born in Sandy Creek Twp. April 27, 1815. He was the only child of Samuel and Nancy Minnis. Instructed and encouraged by his mother, he , in his boyhood years, manifested superior educational abilities. Surpassing many his age, he early left the district school to enter Jamestown Academy.
There he pursued the study of Latin under the direction of Prof. Gamble. After finishing the academic course he entered
Allegheny College in 1837. Failing health obliged him to leave college when just ready to enter upon the Senior year.
Meanwhile he had taught both in Crawford and Mercer counties. He afterwards taught a number of years in Washington Co., Pa., also a number of terms in Fayette county.
Subsequently he married Elizabeth Newbold and settled on the farm in Sandy Creek Twp. where his widow and two
youngest sons now live. Seven sons and four daughters were the fruit of this union, ten of whom grew to manhood and womanhood, and eight survive their father. Mr. Minnis was a Christian gentleman good citizen, a devoted Husband and a kind father. At the age of eighteen he joined
the F.B. Church, of which he lived a consistent member until his Master called him from the church militant to the church triumphant.
During the long and painful illness great patience was manifested by the sufferer. He spoke of the rest for which he longed and requested his friends to meet him.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Page, who preached from II Timothy, 1-10. The remains were interred in
Stephenson cemetery.
"When a good man dies, for years beyond our ken,
The light he leaves shines on the path of men."
