[Bio by Sean Potochney]
Mildred was actually born in Feb 1913 (tombstone off by 1 yr) in what was then Krynica, Galicia. Her original name was Milia Krynytska (Ukrainian surnames end in "ska" for females and "sky" for males). Milia Krynytska and her mother Maria immigrated to the U.S. and arrived in Ellis Island, NY on Jan 17, 1921. Milia then Americanized her name to "Mildred Krynitsky" (modifying her surname also to match her father's).

Mildred and her mother first lived in Western PA where her father, Nikolay Krynitsky (who immigrated to America in 1914) worked as a coal miner. Milia's father, Nikolay, was seriously injured in a coal mining accident in 1921, and the family moved to Centralia, PA in 1923 (now with two more children, Anna (b. Oct 1921) and Joseph (b. Dec 1922)).

In 1929, Mildred Krynitsky married George Potochney, and raised a family of 6 children. Mildred lived in Centralia up until 1986 when the state of Pennsylvania bought out the town due to an underground coal fire. Mildred then moved to Harrisburg, PA where she lived until her death in Dec 2005.
