GEORGE W SMITH, 89, PROMINENT BUILDER, DIES

George W Smith, prominent builder for half a century, died at his home on Main Street, Southold, March 13 at the age of 89. Mr Smith was born in Peconic on January 15, 1873, the son of the late Daniel and Sarah Mack Smith. His father was a veteran of the Civil War.

Mr Smith attended the Southold School and served his apprenticeship as a carpenter in Southampton. He started building in Southold in 1907 and became one of the leading contractors on the North Fork. The firm later became George W Smith & Sons.

Mr Smith, over the years, was always devoted to his family and home, being a kind and understanding father and loving husband. He and Mrs Smith observed their 55th wedding anniversary on January 10th of this year.

He was a member of the Southold Grange.

Funeral services were conducted today (Thursday) at 3:30 PM at the DeFriest Funeral Home, Southold, with the Rev Harold Sabin officiating. Interment was in the Willow Hill Cemetery, Southold.

He is survived by his wife Rose Bennett Smith; three sons, Daniel, George H and William B Smithy; one daughter Marion R King; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
