Following is the obituary of Mr. Garrison, prepared at family request by Mrs. Pauline Stocke:
Many friends of Joe Garrison and family were deeply grieved when the news came that Mr. Garrison had passed away, February 23, at the Welborn Hospital in Evansville, Indiana, where he had been a patient for almost two weeks. Mr. Garrison had been in failing health for some time, the immediate cause of his death being a paralytic stroke.
Mr. Garrison, who was well and favorably known all over the county, was born August 4, 1888, the son of the late A.L. and Nancy Alice Garrison, pioneer residents of Emma Township and at the time of his death was 64 years, 4 months and 19 days old.
He grew to manhood in this county and on November 4, 1907, he and Miss Pauline Land of Big Prairie were united in marriage. Five children blessed their home, namely Wilson and Joe A. Garrison, Carmi, Mrs. Orlin (Blanche) Martin of Herald Prairie Township and Mrs. Murrell (Frances) Loy of Fairfield, Ill. A daughter died in infancy. The above named children, the beloved wife, two sisters, Mrs. Lura Abshier,Evansville, Indiana and Lucy Questell, Carmi, a brother, Roscoe Garrison of Lansing, Michigan, a half brother, James T. Garrison of this city, together with 8 grandchildren survive him.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Dillard and Alex Garrison, also a much loved grandson, Kenneth Martin, the son of Orlin and Blanche Martin, who passed away a few years ago after a brief illness.
Mr. Garrison moved to Carmi in 1929 from Emma Township. For several years he was a valued employee of the Ford Motor Company of this city. Here he had a wide acquaintance and was known for his fair dealings. Later he was employed at the Strand Theater in Carmi, where he was well liked and highly respected by the theater going public. At the time of his death he was proprietor of the South Side Grocery where he had built up a good business.
He was a member of the First Methodist Church of Carmi and Past Master of the Masonic Lodge, 272 of Carmi, also a Royal Arch Mason. He had spent his entire life in this county and in all his dealings with his fellow man, he was above reproach. Being of a friendly disposition, ready at all times to do a favor, he made friends easily and retained them throughout his life.
Joe Garrison possessed firmness of character and has left to all who knew him, that most enviable of titles, the name of an honest man. The presence of a friend may be taken away, but not the memory of having had one. He bore his last illness patiently and with great fortitude, during which his beloved wife and children were devoted to him, doing all that could be done. He will not only be missed in his home, but by all who knew him. And so, let us lay a wreath of loving memory upon a life well lived.
