Alvin L. Herr, 83, retired from Alumax
Alvin L. Herr, 83, of 15B Terrace Ave., Lancaster, died Wednesday in Essa Flory Hospice Center following a brief illness.
He was married to Shirley M. Aitkens-Herr for 14 years and was previously married to E. Viola Herr, who died in 1974.
Born in Manheim Township, he was a son of the late John B. F. and Hattie Long Herr. He attended Manheim Township School District.
Herr retired in 1979 after 18 years at Alumax/Amerimax, where he was the chief die setter. Earlier in his career, he worked for New Holland Machine Co.
He served in the U.S.Navy during World War 11 in the Pacific.
He was a 62 year member of Christ United Methodist Church, Lancaster, where received a Father of the Year award and served on various committees and held several offices. He was a member of the Manheim Township Retirees, the Lititz Senior Center and the Alumax/Amerimax Retirees.
He enjoyed gardening and playing the accordian.
Surviving besides his wife are one son, Dwight, married to Joyce Herr of Wellsboro; one daughter, Vickie M., married to Dale Zimmerman of Akron; one stepson, Harry L., married to Christen Aitkens of Lewisberry; two grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; three step great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Alverta Stahl of Neffsville and Miriam, married to Edwin Dyer of Manheim Township.
