Dorothy Gordon Groover Schutrumpf, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2012, a few days after breaking her leg in a fall.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Robert J. Schutrumpf; her brother and her sister.

She is survived by her daughter, Susanna Carle (Richard); and sons, Robert John Jr. (Pam), William (Marian) and Andrew (Molly); also grandchildren, John Schutrumpf, Theresa Winter, John Geneva, Robert Schutrumpf III, Ryan Schutrumpf and Gracie Schutrumpf; three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Dorothy was born in Savannah, GA, in 1921. Her father's career as a physician with the Veterans' Administration took the family to Richmond, Roanoke, and Washington, DC.

Dorothy and Bob had completed their freshman year at the University of Maryland when he was drafted and assigned to the Army Air Corps in Gulfport, MS. They were married in Gulfport in 1943.

After the war, Bob finished college and Dorothy took care of the family. They moved to Richmond in 1951.

Dorothy was an avid reader and a lifelong learner. She earned a bachelor's degree in social work from VCU in 1970, which led to a brief but absorbing career as a social worker for the City of Richmond. When she was in her 60s, she returned to VCU as an auditing student, commuting from Stuart Avenue on her bicycle to pursue her interests in Spanish language and literature, psychology, theology and music.

Her love of music encompassed Nelson Eddy, Placido Domingo and Bob Dylan, and she was a faithful supporter and loyal fan of the musicians of the Richmond Symphony.

A memorial service was held on Friday, October 26, 2012, at 4pm, at The Hermitage, 1600 Westwood Avenue.
