Ann Chambliss

During the sunny Sunday morning hours of October 21, 2012; on her only sibling's birthday, Elizabeth Ann Harden Chambliss slept peacefully into eternity.

E. Ann C., as she was fondly known was born October 10, 1944, in Paris, Tennessee, the first born child of the late Joseph Henry Harden and the late Elizabeth Diggs Harden. She accepted Christ at an early age as a member of Quinn Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church, Paris, TN. Her primary education was in Paris, where she graduated from Central High School as Class Valedictorian in 1961. Ann received her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Tennessee State University, Nashville and her Masters of Arts in Early Childhood education from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana.

Ann married Ivery J. Chambliss in 1963 and to this union two (2) sons were born, Keith Renaldo (deceased) and Lemont Alandre. They remained married for twenty (20) years.

As far back as can be remembered, Ann always wanted to be a teacher. Certainly she was influenced by the example of her father, an elementary principal, prior to becoming Assistant Superintendent in the Paris Tennessee School District and her mother a second grade teacher who retired after having taught forty (40) years in the same school district. Ann retired at the end of the 2004-2005 school year, after having worked for forty (40) years in the Decatur Public School District #61. As a classroom teacher for thirty-four (34) years and Pre-Kindergarten parent Coordinator for six (6) years, she touched the lives of many District #61 families and served on numerous school district and community committees.

Ann was the first and thus far the only African-American to have served as president of the 900+ member Decatur Education Association (the teachers union) for an unprecedented eleven (11) years.

She also served on the Illinois Education Association Board of Directors and was one of six (6) Illinois teachers who represented the IEA on the National Education Association Board of Directors. She also served as a member of the IEA Elections committee and was a delegate to the 2000 Democratic National convention. Ann also attended the second Inauguration of President Bill Clinton and the Inauguration of President Barack Obama.

Ann was an active member of Saint Peter's African Methodist Episcopal church, a Life Member of the NAACP and a Life Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. She received the 1990 YWCA Women of Excellence Award, and the 1992 IEA Human and Civil Rights Award. She was our school district's 1999 Teacher of the Year.

Ann was an extraordinary daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, niece, cousin teacher and friend. She looked for the best in others and was always willing to help those in need. She was definitely devoted to her family and friends.

Ann's sweet, sweet spirit will live on in the loved ones she leaves behind, including: devoted sister, Janet Bunch of Decatur; loving son, Lemont (Meghan) Chambliss of Tampa, FL; adoring grandchildren, Ashton Bray of Decatur, Kaelynn and Andrayas Chambliss of Tampa, FL; caring niece and nephews, Janae (Patrick) O'Neal and Joel Bunch of Decatur; special great nieces and nephews, Devyn, DruAnn, Danae and Tyrick Bunch and Jada and Jordyn O'Neal of Decatur; Keylon O'Neal of Houston, TX; dear aunt, Johnnie Diggs of Las Vegas, NV; special cousins, Rosemary (Reverend Ed) Jackson and Corneilus (Forrestine) Diggs of Decatur; special friends, Shawn Bray of Decatur and Tina Faulkner of Tampa, FL; and a host of other loving relatives and dear friends.

Celebration of Life Services: Visitation: 4:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. Sunday, October 28, 2012, at the St. Peters A.M.E. Church. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M.
