According to the book "A History of St. Mary's Parish, Sterling, Illinois" published in 1976, Manuel Garcia, Jr. advises that his father, Manuel, Sr., left Mexico in 1913, and started working in the coal mines in Mallicof, Texas. In those days, most of the Mexican men went to work for the railroad as soon as possible after arriving in the United States with the intention of getting to large cities, such as Chicago, where there were more opportunities. Manuel, Sr., also started working for the railroad soon after his arrival in Texas, and his work brought him to Sterling about 1914. He left the railroad and started working for the Northwestern Barb Wire Company, now Northwestern Steel & Wire Company, then worked at the old Gas & Electric Light Company located next to the wire mill for a short time, returned to the mill in 1917 and remained there until his retirement in 1960.
