Nellie Mooney Lewis, a former teacher of penmanship in the Gainesville Public schools, died Tuesday in the Central Park Nursing Home in Dallas.

She was the daughter of Cooke County pioneers, John Henry and Elizabeth Jane Mooney. Mooney immigrated to America from Killarney County, Ireland at the start of the Civil War and he served in the Confederate Army until being captured by the North. While in prison he met William Burrus, Elizabeth's father. He accompanied Burrus to his home in Gainesville after the war. He married Elizabeth in 1870 and settled on a farm some six miles east of Gainesville ine the Oak Valley School District. Mrs. Lewis married Leslie Ray Lewis, Sr. in Dallas in 1913.

Survivors are aone son, Ray Lewis; daughters, Margaret Loerwald, Mildred Setrak and Mary Willis; 22 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
