                SAW LINCOLN SHOT
Mrs. Josephine Houghton Smith Dies at Her Home in Forty Fort
That she had seen President Lincoln assassinated in the Ford theatre in Washington in 1865 was the momentous feature in the life of Mrs. Josephine Houghton Smith, aged 79, who died at the home of her nephew, Earl Hughes, 47 Fort street, Forty Fort, Saturday. Mrs. Smith was born in Kingston Township in 1841, but at the time of the President's assassination was a companion and governess of the daughter of John T. Ford, owner of the theatre.
Mrs. Smith taught in several schools and colleges until she married Anderson Smith and moved to Denver, Col. Upon his death in 1896 she returned to Luzerne Borough and has lived within the county ever since. The funeral service will be held from the home on Fort street to-morrow morning at 10:30 o'clock and interment is to be in Forty Fort Cemetery.
